Une danse de mort

Voici donc, sous le titre donné par Robert Huot, La jeune fille et la mort, deux dates accolées qui me semblent pour le moins énigmatiques : 2009-2021.

J'appelle pour mémoire l'exposition dernière présentée en 2019 à la galerie Arnaud Lefebvre Red Classic/Red Figure (2009-2019), où se déployaient 9 tableaux photographiques — dont l'emblématique Expulsion — réalisés en 2009 avec sa femme Carol Kinne, décédée en 2016.

Alors que j'aligne ces dates, j'en saisis d'un coup l'effroi temporel et je me trouve plongé au cœur d'un drame exactement profane.

Robert Huot n'est-il pas inconsolé de ses années de veuvage ? Dans la chambre vide, j'imagine qu'il tourne et retourne les photographies de Carol faites en 2009 ; elle apparaît si jeune et désirable, mais par quel biais la rejoindre. C'est donc ainsi qu'il aurait décidé l'autoportrait à entrer dans la danse ?

Une douzaine d'années, c'est la durée qu'il aura fallu pour que l'artiste en vienne à concevoir cet oratorio grotesque en rouge et en noir principalement, incrustant numériquement sa chair dans la chair des images vives de sa jeune fille de femme.

J'y suis. La mort est là, mais l'âme est lasse. Et ce n'est pas la mort qui menace de sa faux, mais c'est la mort qui est invoquée dans ces gestes de supplication et d'offrande que je prête au vieil homme, au modèle, à l'artiste.

Je ne vois dans ces photographies aucune forme de symbolisme, nulle allégorie, et c'est justement par cet affrontement sans détour que se déploie toute l'humanité en ce qu'elle désire et en ce qu'elle souffre.

Ici encore à l'œuvre, toute la puissance de l'art, et je fantasme en ce que Robert Huot pourrait enfin dire : « en ceci, je te rejoins de m'être inscrit en ton image ».

Le dit-il ? J'aime à croire qu'il livre parmi nous, et lumineusement, ces photographies comme l'aveu d'une indéfectible mélancolie et d'une indicible tendresse.

L'amour, la mort, qu'en savons-nous ? Nous en resterons là…

A Dance of Death

Here are, under the English title given by Robert Huot, two dates side by side that seem enigmatic to me, to say the least : 2009-2021.

For the record, I call to mind the last exhibition in 2019 at the Arnaud Lefebvre Gallery Red Classic/Red Figure (2009-2019), which featured 9 photographs - including the emblematic Expulsion - made in 2009 with his wife Carol Kinne, who died in 2016.

As I line up these dates, I suddenly grasp the temporal dreadness and find myself plunged into the heart of a precisely profane drama.

Isn't Robert Huot inconsolable about his years of widowhood ? In the empty room, I imagine that he is turning over and over the photographs of Carol made in 2009 ; she appears so young and desirable, but how to reach her ? So is this how he would have decided the self-portrait to enter the dance ?

It took the artist several years to come to conceive this grotesque oratorio, mainly in red and black, digitally inlaying his flesh into the flesh of the vivid images of his young daughter of a woman.

Here we go. Death is here, but the soul is weary. And it is not death that threatens with its scythe, but it is death that is invoked in these gestures of supplication and offering that I lend to the old man, the model, the artist.

I do not see in these photographs any form of symbolism, any allegory, and it is precisely through this straightforward confrontation that the whole of humanity unfolds its desires and sufferings.

Here again at work, the whole power of art, and I fantasize in what Robert Huot might finally say : “In this, I join yourself in having inscribed myself in your image.”

Does he say so ? I like to believe that he delivers among us, and luminously, these photographs as an admission of an indefectible melancholy and unspeakable tenderness.

Love, death, what do we know about it ? Let's leave it at that…
