American Landscape

Un voyage photographique et fictionnel

, Julie Chovin

It was stranger than Paradise.

I got the measure of emptiness.
I have seen sixty-six buffalos when
I was looking for the traces of the Dust Bowl.
On the road, accompanied by some easy riders,
I filled the tank into thirty-six gasoline stations.
From Paris to Texas, through American surfaces I photographed
man-altered landscape. There are no small journeys,
they are all worth to capture in a road trip journal.
Between the dog and the wolf, I was feeling out of the ordinary.
Lit from the night window from a hotel room, I was watching
the wild flowers and mapped a survey of the metropolitan area.
I wanted to learn from Las Vegas, watching
neon signs by day and night, and became the witness number one.
I traveled with mystery trains. I slept in
some Los- Angeles apartments,
had a swim in nine pools and broke a glass.
Beach cities where everyone seemed
to be on a permanent vacation.
I walked along every building on the Sunset Strip.
During night walks,
I lit some small fires and extinguished them with milk.
I heard the leaves and loved the light.
It was the perfect time, the perfect place
and it offered me a shimmer of possibility.
